Speed Loss From Hull Flex - The Cure!!
« on: May 21, 2021, 12:34:41 PM »
Time takes it's toll on these plastic hulls and there isn't enough bracing or rigidity to keep it in shape, hull balloons up and acts like a parachute causing a loss of speed. I took a chance of adding weight in hopes of stiffening the hull with 6061 aluminum which would hold it's shape. Totally success, got my speed back and then some! Gained a solid 2 mph in spite of the 13 lb addition!!! All these old hulls now have the opportunity for renewed life!!! Huge!!! 🥳👍

Order some 6061 for me!
I've noticed that mine sits on the floor much different than Cheri's, more flat without the side to side
rocking motion she has with her Mokai. We'll can check it out next week and see what you think.

If I ordered it today it wouldn't be here until Friday next week, wouldn't be here in time to get it installed. It would definitely benefit any one piece hull though. I ordered two sheets, will use them regardless so we'll see it they show up in time for you or not.

My AirB&B reservation is from Tues 5/25 thru Tues 6/1 and could stay until Wed evening.
Hopefully I don't need the fix, but while I'm visiting it wouldn't hurt to see.
Might not get to come down for awhile...who knows. Plus I can't go home without the latest and greatest Painless modification.  ;)

Now that you picked up a few new RC planes, I have to stay for the show.   :)

Well that might work out then. My last order with them had a lot of cut tubing for wear rings also, might have slowed down the processing time, so could have sooner. Being here that long we should have plenty of time to do whatever you need.  \./8

Making one from aluminum would be pretty expensive, I could only imagine the cost to do one with carbon fiber... lol If I was going to spend that kind of money I'd just buy a 300hp supercharged Minijet and be done with it. haha  :D

Any feedback on CC-Coder’s retrofit to his vintage one piece hull?  My 2006 definitely has the balloon effect that Tom explained on his threads video. Tom, is this retrofit best left for your shop and skillset and not something to try on our own?  Thanks, John

I'm sure there are others who could do the work themselves, but I certainly wouldn't encourage anyone to try. It's not very easy and there are some tricks to getting it right. I've done 4 or 5 now, each one had gains. Not sure it would be the best option for you since you play in salt water. It would eat the aluminum pretty quickly I'm sure.

Thx Tom for that insight.  Nice to avoid going down unnecessary rabbit holes…….
