Title: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on November 25, 2013, 08:31:42 PM
Rebuilt an old RC truck I had floating around my shop for years... Finally decided I was going to do something with it when a production company paid me $200 to use one of my moon video clips in a movie.. so I had to have some fun and hopped up the poor old truck, now it's a monster!! This is what happens to one who has no kids, just continue to be one. lol  :D

Paint and powder coating is finished, all that's left is installing the electronics once everything arrives. This is turning out much nicer than I had anticipated, really starting to look like something.  :D

Love it and can't wait for more.  Made my first air boat from piece of 2x4,  sticks from 10 cent kite, prop from rubber band plane, and electric motor from another toy, 2 D batteries held in with finishing nails.  Was five at the time.  One of my first boats, and one of my best.

Thanks!! This hobby is so very addicting... lol  Glad I could bring back some good old memories, thanks for sharing. I am guilty of building things like that as a kid, too. It's amazing what can be made with rubber bands, paper clips, Popsicle sticks and some glue! Too much fun.

All that alloy on the pede will make it a tank. Only thing I would have done different is used plastic a arms instead. Integy alloy won't bounce back after a hard hit or cartwheel off a bad landing. I loved my mcpx. They are fun little birds.  That weedeater airboat is awesome. Looks like it moves a lot of air. Test run looks to have cleared your lathe of chips in the process. I look forward to seeing your progress.
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on December 12, 2013, 04:23:16 PM
Nah, you'd be surprised. Really makes a difference in longevity with the brushless setup. At 30 mph, a few of the wrecks would have broken the plastic parts guaranteed, aluminum does help in the right places. The chassis, skid plates and body mounts are still plastic, so there is some flex allowed still. I'm not competing, or even playing with other trucks, so run time isn't a concern either. Just goofing off in the back yard, having fun. I'm putting together a Trex 450 heli right now, almost finished and should have some video of that some day soon.

I got my Bobblehead in today, along with a couple other parts I've been waiting for to finish the Airboat. This weekend should be THE weekend to put it in the water for the debut. I got a bigger prop too, going to bump up from a 14x7 to a 14x9, might be able to use it as a leaf blower? hehe
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: techj527 on December 12, 2013, 05:34:34 PM
I have 2 trex 450's just sitting on a shelf with a bunch of spare parts. One is flybarless with a microbeast the other is the flybared version. I got them in a trade from a buddy. Im not confident in my piloting skills yet to grab the sticks on either of them. Ill stick to my micros. Perhaps we can make a trade in the future for some mokai work when I get the new gen unit.
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on December 12, 2013, 06:26:37 PM
As you know, it's all about LOTS of practice... Simulator is priceless, if you don't have one yet. Once thing that is nice about the micros is they all come set to run, no adjustments to the links or head, and balancing isn't much of an issue. Not to mention you can crash the micro and usually get away with no damage. I'm converting my 450 to the DFC head, never did like the flybar setup. Just need to finish balancing the blades and level the swash, then wait for a calm day with no wind. Have you every played with airplanes? I lost my last one to a loose Rx Crystal, so a buddy gave me a larger plane that needed to be restored that I'm almost finished with too. Can't wait to get some aerial video footage with that. 68" wingspan with flaperons, and an OS .61 SF engine with 11x7 prop, should be fun.

We'll see how it goes when you're ready for that Mokai work, might be able to work something out.. anything is possible, I'll keep it in mind.

I have 3 of the pz micro planes. The night vapor, the polecat and the umx yak. I also have the msr, msrx, and nqx. I also dabble in on and off road I have a very build axial wraith, an axial exo terra an scx10. And an hpi tcx touring car.

All in all, don't feel alone in being a big kid. My wife says I'm the biggest kid she knows.

Very cool man, I've been wanting to get a Wraith. You've got a nice RC garage built up there, tons of fun for sure. I'm starting to get comfortable with some 3D heli flying on the simulator, even put my mCPX in stunt mode and did some flips and rolls successfully. Good times.  \./8

Now for the update.

My airboat catptain has reported for duty... He should be ready for his first mission tomorrow, as long as the weather clears up!

Some might notice the fuel tank has been moved, the fill cap has a vent in it and was wanting to leak... So moving it upright was necessary, also makes it easier to fill.

Put it in the water today, and while everything worked perfectly..... Fast, it was not. Motor / prop combo were just too small for the scale, at least the motor was. I needed to see 10,000 rpm at the prop but could only get 6700... so the missing speed could have made a big difference. If I can find a bigger chainsaw motor for the right price, I might see about upgrading and using a bigger prop.

LOL Thanks, Bob. Mini-MO could run circles around it though! haha Hopefully I'll have some flight video soon, airplane and heli are almost ready.

Old motor a buddy of mine gave me. It was locked up when I got it. I tore it down, freshened it up, and fit it to the airplane fuselage. This is the first start tuning run. I think it's going to work well, sure pulls hard.. plenty of power.

So far, so good. One aspect of this hobby that slows the process down, is the learning curve can be a painful one... so pre-flight checks end up becoming an extended operation. Watching others crash and learning why, lots of on ground testing, lots of time on the simulator... I don't want to post another crash video!  lol :D

I've gotten very comfortable flying the heli inverted in the simulator, and have even done some with the mCPX the past few days. Simple rolls, flips, and some inverted hovering. I can see myself getting good at flying 3D one day, but never great. I found this video, and am still trying to wrap my mind around what's being done... makes my brain bleed a little trying to keep up. Awesome piloting, greatly understated.  :-O

Ever tried a bicopter? Like the V22 Osprey but the rotors don't tilt forwards, they tilt towards the sides.
I built it from a kit by a guy named Gary Gress. Look up a website called gress aeronautics? I don't think the web site is maintained anymore!? But go on YouTube and search Invader 600!

That's different, very cool though. Figuring out the programming process for the electronics can be challenging sometimes. I know some gyros have settings for mounting orientation, if that has anything to do with your inversion issues. Where is the CG on that anyhow? Looks really nose heavy with the camera. I'm waiting on a 3 axis gyro for my 450 heli, luckily I found a good youtube video of a guy walking through all the settings on the same model. Some of this stuff can make you want to pull your hair out for sure.. hahaha  >:(  And all these years I though people went bald from old age.  :D

Post up that flight video when you get it working, would love to see some cool footage.

Ok.. So I finally finished building my Quadcopter. I'm by no means finished with the build, but the kit is complete, and flies great. Going to add some more electronics eventually to give me FPV, OSD and GPS (First person view / wireless video feed with onboard display). Also planning to make a mount for my GoPro since this quad is large enough to easily carry it.

Once I get some decent weather there will be video of a real flight. Hovering in my kitchen was fun, but that's just not what this is for! lol

Thanks! I find trucks allot of fun also, but flight has taken me full force. It's the one thing I haven't been able to exercise at a full scale level, so taking to the skies through the eyes of a camera is a suitable alternative. Also, the ability to capture useful footage is going to be an added bonus.

I love the toy box! My squadron has grown a little as well. I picked up a blade nano qx,  and a nano cp.  I haven't got inverted flight down yet on my nervous tiny bird. How do you like the war bird and the 540 qq? I have the umx yak. It is a little faster than my comfort zone allows and has the sudden effects of gravity damage to show for it.

Thanks! I've been working on inverted hovering with my Trex 450,  I can do flips and rolls with my mCPX BL but it's a squirrely little guy. The Corsair F4U is twitchy, but fun. I've had to move the esc outside for better cooling and move to a 2 blade prop, had to add 30 grams to the nose to get the CG better. Hope to fly it again this weekend to see how the changes worked. What are you referring to when you asked about the 540 qq? I just rearranged the trailer again, had to make room for a new addition. Buddy hooked me up with a old Biplane, has a .75 2 stroke and 58" wingspan. My favorite plane for the moment is the Easy Stick 40 that I built with a .46 size brushless motor run on a 5s lipo. Loads of fun!

The 540 qq was the green, white and blue aerobatic plane in one of your videos. I've been looking at umx f4 with the as3x.

Oh, gotcha'. Unfortunately I never get myself in those videos, unless it's onboard video, since I am the only one filming. The GoPro isn't much use past take off and landing since it has such a wide angle view, you don't see much but a speck flying around. The as3x sounds like it will make things easy, some would say cheating.. lol Can't say I haven't thought about getting a 3-axis receiver a few times. The bigger the plane, the easier it is to fly.

Hi Tom, Pretty skillful video, I am glade I didn't eat anything prior to watching.  I've been shopping quad copters for the last 6 months or so with reasonable price in mind and reliability of operation.  I finally settled on a Walkera  QR X350 Pro from Hobby King.  You appear to have a considerable knowledge on operation of quads.  My question is, when going into gps hold position, dose operating the controls affect the hold position?  The instruction specifically says to not move the throttle when in gps hold.   I made my first flight yesterday.  After putting in gps hold I decided to give it a try.  To my surprise everything was operational, once I returned the throttle to a neutral position it would hold again!  Did I answer my own question?

Thanks, John

Thanks! I spend lots of time with the simulator, once things are committed to muscle memory is when the real fun begins.

John, welcome to world of quadcopters. When in GPS mode, the quad will stay in position. Moving the throttle will affect altitude, and moving the aileron and elevator controls will cause movement until you let go of the stick, at which time the quad will stay in that new position. If you want the altitude to stay locked in position you would need to have a throttle hold switch programmed to set throttle to 50%, then you can flip that switch and it will hover wherever you set it (the throttle stick would have no effect then). Putting the throttle stick to 50% will put it in hover mode too. But yes, all of the sticks will still work when in GPS mode. Hope that made sense, let me know if you have any more questions.. or a better answer. lol

Tom, See if you can help me with this one. Our previous discussion was about GPS hold.  I have a Devention 10 transmitter (Devo 10) which is a programable transmitter for several types of flying aircraft.  I have a mode 1 which is set up for right hand throttle.  The throttle currently does not have a return spring to the neutral position which I assume is the 50% position.  Do you know if it is possible to install a return to neutral spring in the right control stick like the left control stick.  I have a friend who has a Phantom 2, his transmitter has return to neutral spring stick on both sides of his tramsmitter, it is not a devo 10.  He told me my transmitter is like it is because of multiple applications.  I am in learning mode.
Thanks, John  >:(
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on June 25, 2014, 07:38:10 AM
The norm is Mode 2, throttle on the left. It is also the norm for the throttle to be all the way down for 0% and there should never be a spring on the throttle, it should only center from left to right for rudder control. Your friend is teaching you strange things that the rest of the world does not do. I'm not familiar with your transmitter, so can't help with the programming part, but I would recommend getting one on mode 2.
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Rottweilerman on June 25, 2014, 07:46:42 PM
Tom, I agree on the strange comment.  I did a little more research on the throttle spring.  It appears that DJI who puts out the Phantom quads, is the only quad to have this feature.  I wonder what they know that everybody else hasn't figured out. Oh Well.  I know that Mode 2 is the norm, I just have more dexterity with my right hand.  I'll just keep practicing before I put my gimbal and camera in motion.
Thanks, John

If you're comfortable with Mode 1, then stick with it, that's why there are two modes. To each their own.  ;)  But definitely no spring on the throttle.

Incredible video. Give kudos to the cameraman. How did he keep up with some of those copters.

Tom, I decided that maybe mode 2 is the better way to go because all the switches that I have to operate are on the right side, so it makes since to have the throttle on the left.  Well, I went and changed my transmitter which was very easy to do with the devo 10.  Now I have to retrain my left hand.   I am still pondering over that throttle spring return thing!  Thanks for the sensibility with the situation.

John

Thanks, John. The cameraman would be me.. lol Filming stuff like that is like flying them, takes lots of practice with the right equipment. I've been playing with filming and video editing for many years.  ;D

Why anyone would want a spring to center the throttle stick is beyond my comprehension... I'm picturing a landing then a thumb slipping off the throttle and it returning to 50%, the quad taking off and flying into somebody. When you put the throttle to 0% it should STAY at 0%, anything else is just dangerous.

Good luck switching to mode 2, I couldn't imagine trying to learn mode 1.. It's literally like converting to left handed after being right. Hope you have a simulator, otherwise the learning curve could be an expensive one!

Buddy of mine in the club gave me an old Biplane that was one of several airplanes left at an RC field many years ago by an older fellow who's failing health and eyesight forced him to get out of the hobby. This plane sat in a corner for 10 years collecting dust, engine locked up, and a little rough around the edges. I got it running, went through fixing or replacing things as needed, made several upgrades, and finally got a chance to do the maiden flight Sunday. You will be seeing allot more of this plane!

What the world needs is more big kids.  Big kids go out and play and they dont spend their time trying to burn or shoot or torture other kids.  We need to air drop a whole lot of radio controlled toys in the mid east so maybe the mid east wacko muslims would play a little more and hurt others a little less. I recently purchased a setup for FPV.  Walkera F12E radio, Devo RX1202 receiver,  Devo TX5803 transmitter and FPV connector converter.   Take a look a my sketch attachment for my issue.   I believe I have all my other connections in place with the exception of the one on my sketch.

The 1202 doesn't support SBus from what I can tell, you will have to use jumper cables from each channel of the Devo M to the 1202. I'm not familiar with any of the components you are using, so anything other than general advice is beyond me. rcgroups.com would be the place to get the most help, if I wasn't able to.

My understanding of SBus is it's a "digital" way of communicating all of the channels functions through one cable. This keeps the installation clean, and simple. In your case, the rx doesn't have SBus so each channel must be linked directly with a jumper cable. AIL to AIL, ELE to ELE, THR to THR etc... This is how I've always connected things and what I am familiar with, you will just need to get the cables.

Here is the newest addition to my fleet. The TRex 600, almost twice the size of my 450 that sitting beside it.

Tom,  They look awesome.  Have you flown the big guy yet, if so do you have a video.  I'd like to see that. \./8

I think your wright about the cable connections.  The place where I purchased the kit (Hobby wow) said the buss connection from the m-controller is not used.   I asked them for additional setup information.  Of course there is a language interpretation issue to deal with.

I found an e-bay site online that sells the cables (walkerus).  I also located a forum dedicated to Walkera Quad-copters and Helicopters.  I am going to post my scenario on the forum and see what response I get.

Can you explain your reading on how to bind the radio with the receiver!

Thanks< John

These are the cables you need.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-10pcs-10cm-Quadcopter-Servo-Extension-Lead-Futaba-JR-Male-to-Male-Wire-Cable-/161389204828?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item25938bd55c

The binding procedure varies depending on brand, can't be of much help there. I use Spektrum DSMX.

I Just got the big 600 heli, still need to get the DFC head and flight controller before I fly it. I'm in the beginner stages of 3D acrobatics, inverted flight etc.. The larger platform will be much smoother and more stable, not to mention easier to see. I'll get some video when the time comes.

Tom,  Got the quad all wired up and radio setup for basic functions.   Did a test flight, but didn't have the Go Pro attached for FPV, for obvious reasons.  The only problem I had is the elev/rudd were switched in operation.  Will have to open up the top of the quad and check wire locations.  A little windy today 12 mph, but manageable.  Flight was good.
Have you ever heard of the Go Pro messing with gps operation?

By the way, got it, excellent, now we wait. \./8   Thanks,

Nice man, glad to hear it.  :)

Good thing the reversed channels didn't put you in the dirt, not many are able to recover from such mistakes. I've heard people talk about GoPro's affecting the electronics but haven't experienced any problems with mine. I would suggest keeping the GoPro as far from the FC as possible, and in it's waterproof case.

Tom,  I do remember when I was installing the transmitter TX1202, the instructions did indicate wrapping it in foil, but I did not because I barely had a enough space to slip the transmitter in with hard wires attached.  The old transmitter had one wire and two gimbal connectors and it was smaller.  Even had to carefully trim a part of a board.
When we were working on it in the hobby shop an other guy came in and started talking about Go Pro RF interference.  He said that he wrapped his Go Pro with copper tape and that resolved the problem.  That's a little over my head. ???  You electrical geniuses would know more.
Anyway, just a little more fuel for the fire.  Sometimes I think I would have been better to sell what I had before updating it, and just going out and spending a couple grand or so to get what I really wanted.
I'm out of here, later.
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on March 27, 2015, 08:00:33 AM
If I recall correctly, the interference wasn't with the rx but with the fpv signal. But like I said, have never had any problems using my gopro on any of my quads so it's not a real problem in my book. I doubt you'll have any issues, just don't stuff the gopro in on top of the rx or fc. lol

Building is a good experience, it's less expensive then buying rtf, and in the end it will help you become a better pilot. Then there is the self satisfaction of flying something you created. That is one of the funnest parts of the hobby!  \./8

Tom,  Got everything checked out with the quad on the bench, then took it out for a test flight.  Everything finally adjusted to go the directions as requested. \./8     While I was flying I heard a faint vibration while it was hovering  and thought a screw might have come loose. :-[    Took it back to the bench, took props off and re-tighten all the screws.   Started her up to 50% throttle and gave a listen.  Son of a b----, >:(  one of the motors started smoking, quickly I shut her down and unplugged the power.   Boy you talk about bad karma.  Ordered another motor Friday, should get in a couple of days.

Oh wow, glad you caught it before a crash happened! Hope the new one shows up quickly, did you order from Hobby King? I've been waiting for an ESC for a little airplane I built, it's been two weeks and it still hasn't been shipped yet. They are relocating the West warehouse to Oregon, so if you ordered from there you can expect delays....  :(

Very cool Tom, :)  Is the flat wing easier to fly than a quad and does the wind have any different effect more-so on one or the other!  Love the green color, I have the same color accents on my super-duty and boat trailer.

I bought my quad from Hobby King a little over a year ago, but they were out of stock on the motor I needed.  I went on eBay and found it thru a Walkerausa warehouse in Florida.   There is a place I think in Washington called Walkera Helicopter Supply, but their a little expensive and don't appear to carry a wide variety of parts.  It's funny, if you didn't buy it from them they are reluctant to discuss any questions you may have, great business philosophy! ::)

Hey, got to go.  Got things to do and people to see.   Will advise on the quad issue and any phone calls I may receive!  ;)

Quads are much easier... I won't go into how many airplanes I've crashed over the past couple years. Taking off and flying isn't too bad, you'd do ok with that for the most part. It's landing that presents the biggest learning curve, and learning what stall speed is when you slow down too much. If you want to try, I suggest the Real Flight simulator for your computer. Comes with a USB transmitter like you'd fly with so you are really practicing. Invaluable tool.

LOL That was two separate flights, one with the camera up and one with the camera down. I have a release system on the bottom that I activate with a switch I have programmed. Have dropped him several times in the past, kids love chasing after him, and I've been wanting to put a camera on him somehow. Today I finally made that happen, makes the hobby that much more fun.  \./8

For those that enjoy my RC adventures.. This is my winter project. This was a buddies plane that he broke the tail during transport, began rebuilding and moved on to a bigger version instead. I photographed it many times and it was the first giant scale RC airplane I'd ever seen. Now it's mine, and it's hard to believe I've come this far in the hobby to be ready for a plane this size. At 38% scale, it's wingspan is over 11', and the motor is a 120cc 12.2hp that spins a 29" prop. Smoke system is going to make this a show shopper. I'll post updates on the build as I make progress.

Sweet Tom! Not sure how the model performs but I have some time in a full size Citabria and a Decathlon and they are great. Bill Hempel puts out some great models. I worked with him years ago and I will say he can make an RC plane dance.

Thanks! I can't wait to fly it. I've watched this plane fly numerous times, and it's just an amazing performer. It had a 106cc engine in it then, I am putting a 120cc engine in it now. Performance will be even better. I expect to be able to fly out of a hover with some authority, aerobatics is the flying that I do. The friend I got this from has a 50% of this plane now, and that is super impressive. Not to mention his 50% Cub, and 50% Sbach. Lucky for me he likes to trade for video, photography, and canvas print work. So anything I get from him is all in trade and for a deep discount. haha

Yay... Happy happy joy joy.. She looks good though!  \./8  lol I'm a member of the AMA and fly at the local AMA sanctioned club field. So I'm following their recommendation to hold off until the deadline to give them a little more time to try to stop this from affecting us members since we are already "registered" with them (AMA). This registration thing is not going to stop idiots that don't care about the rules, they just won't register and will continue to do what they wish... Kinda' like gun control, it only affects those who follow the rules. This whole thing is quite laughable, but I think it's going to get worse before it gets better. Glad I live in an area where this type of thing is not in the spotlight, won't affect much really, it's just the principle of the matter that's annoying.

Last night I registered my drone with the FAA just for my protection.  There are people out there looking for an opportunity to put the ca-bash on recreational drone use. >:(  I figured as long as I have a registration number displayed on my drone and practice safe operation that I have nothing to worry about in the event I'm approached by an individual and question's my legal operation.   The penalties for not being registered appear a little severe, but it is what it is! ::)
Everybody have a safe and happy holiday. :)
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on December 24, 2015, 12:22:17 PM
The deadline is Feb 19th... There are no penalties until after that time, unless you bought your "drone" after Dec 21st in which case you are required to register before you fly it. Individuals can kiss my you know what, none of their business what I do on mine or club property. Gravity has caused more problems for more people last year than "drones" ever have.. Maybe the idiots in charge should start trying to regulate that instead. A little less gravity in peoples lives would make a tremendous difference!!!  :))
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Rottweilerman on December 24, 2015, 10:29:57 PM
I understand your passion on the whole subject. \./8  The areas where I fly my drone are considered public access, so in my case it would not be prudent to start a conflict about some place where the sun don't shin. ;)  I don't like the rule as much as the next guy, but sometimes we have to move on, adjust, adapt and overcome.
I'm not sure how the FAA would classify the air space over private property. :))
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....
Post by: Painlesstom on December 24, 2015, 11:36:04 PM
You did the right thing in your circumstances, my rant doesn't apply to those who aren't a member of the AMA. There were laws put into effect back in 2012 that stipulated that the FAA would not, and could not, enact rules to govern the use of hobby R/C aircraft. They broke those rules to establish this registration ordeal. Members of the AMA pay a premium for it's services and insurance, we should not be subjected to the scrutiny of the FAA also, as we are not the problem that prompted their actions in this. It's getting hard to find a hobby that government can keep it's grubby fingers out of these days.... lol

Firearm regulations, drone licencing/registration -permit application where you can an can not fly are on going issues here in NZ as well varies with drones from region to region all decided by our local area councils some flexible an others not.
As we know the individuals whom flout the law usually get smack on the hand, the honest user whom makes a mistake or error in planning are usually punished to the fullest extent of the law.
Hope they get it sorted soon.

LOL, it's not quite that big but close. haha Glad you enjoyed the show. There is a nozzle screwed into each muffler that the smoke oil pump is plumbed into, when I activate it the pump is mixed with the throttle on a curve. Two flights used 1/2 liter of fuel and the same amount of smoke oil. Each tank is 1 liter.  ;D

Haha Thanks, and I'm just beginning to learn the aerobatics stuff. lol If you really want to learn you should get the flight simulator Real Flight G7 for your PC. This is a seriously addictive hobby that involves lots of practice and crashes... and more crashes... Did I mention crashing? There are some good trainer airplanes out there that are very easy to fly and learn with, like this one -> http://www.motionrc.com/e-flite-apprentice-s-15e-with-safe-1500mm-59-wingspan-rtf/

Learning to fly is only part of the hobby, the more you crash the more you learn about building. Then you have to learn how to build so you don't cause a crash. It's a steep learning curve, but immensely enjoyable if you have the patience for a good challenge. Very rewarding once you get it. So many people ask how long it took me to learn how to fly like that.. it's not about how long so much as how much!  :-O Glad I'm single and have no kids.... hehe  :D

Thanks, we've all come a long way in the past couple years. The fun is getting more serious now.. lol

The nitro (glow) motors have a pressure fitting on the muffler that pressurizes the fuel tank and there is a clunk in the tank that keeps the line in the fuel. On the gas planes, there is a fuel pump on the carb just like your weed eater or chainsaw. Same exact setup, Walbro carburetors on those. Same clunk setup in the tank.  \./8

I'm flying by video feed to the goggles, so I'm "on board" if you will. It's call FPV (First Person View). I built this from what was originally the Blade Inductrix. Hop up the motors, battery, and add a video cam and it's called the Tiny Whoop. You can get the Inductrix ready to fly with controller for around $80. You will crash it a lot at first, but it takes a beating no problem and you'll get used to it. They're fun.

Flying Drones at National Parks Can Result in Penalties, Fines
by TOM COSTELLO and ELISHA FIELDSTADT
SHARE

Drones are becoming increasingly ubiquitous, but the rules and regulations on where, when and how they can be used are still hazy at best.

Many drone owners know that they should keep their devices away from airports and downtown Washington, D.C., but they might be surprised to find out that they also can't use them in national parks.

The allure is clear Big Bend, Yosemite, the Grand Canyon and other national parks can offer spectacular views when filmed from above. But those who try to do it with their drones can face penalties and fines.

Here it is right off the web.  It is nation wide.

Friend is building a new airfield / RC wonderland. After nearly a year it is halfway finished, but good enough to "break it in" for a day of fun with the big planes. Here are a couple of our flights, I'm the black/yellow Decathlon and Sean is the Green Yak. Enjoy!  :)

First day of 2017 started out cloudy with some rain, and turned gorgeous afternoon. Flew till the sun went down.  :)

Built my first KISS based FPV quadcopter, and yesterday was the first day of flying with it. Got some cool footage of my friend's large scale plane.

Got a flight in above the landing today on my way out after testing a motor. FPV quads are another addiction within the hobby. LOL

Cool! Whats a good starter set up cost?
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....

To get into a decent FPV set up, you are going to spend around $500 minimum to play. I built the one you saw in the video, the whole 9 yards with camera, goggles, radio etc.. is in the $800 range. I'm sure there are off the shelf products that are much cheaper, but you get what you pay for and stuff like that rarely works as advertised.

Went to another clubs airfield for a Fly-In today. Always weird flying a new field around lots of people you don't know. Had a great time, almost had a bad day though. LOL Watching, not many know how close I was to picking up pieces.  :D

Cool  !!! Looked like you were going to put her in the ground a few times. Sounded like the wind was kicking up.

The close call started at 3:02. I transitioned up too fast and put it into a stall, the wind caught the wing and flipped it over, luckily I had enough power and thumbs that knew what to do. lol Yes, it was windy. 10-15 with 20 mph gusts.  :-O

Nice....How fast is that plane going ?
Title: Re: I'm just a big Kid....

Guessing top speed is somewhere around 70-80 mph. Not something we usually have the means to measure. Engine rpm hits 7000 on the ground, figure at least 300 more in the air. Going to put a bigger prop on for the next flight, this engine has the power for it. Will give me more pulling power while slowing things down just a little. The larger diameter provides more prop wash over the surfaces, and I'll have better control while hovering or any other maneuver where there is no airspeed to move wind over the wings.  \./8

Temps just hit 50 for a couple hours today, broke out the nitro planes for a change. Was nice for a change but also a good reminder of why I moved over to gas instead. Bonus footage of my friend (and owner of the airfield) buzzing the runway with his full scale Cherokee.  \./8

That was pretty cool!  I started to watch it and got distracted. Just now got to see it all. The plane appeared to be hanging in the sky & the reverse smoke cool!

Thanks. He was hovering while I flew around him. Reversing the video at the end turned out pretty cool, I've watched it a dozen times now. lol

That's a BIG one man!!  Do you ever put a FPV setup on any of your planes like you do your drones?   Looks like a lot of fun and a great day to fly.

I've got a few planes set up for FPV. Need to start flying them again.

Awesome! That inverted near collision was wild. I briefly got into RC planes.  If I didn't have way too many hobbies, it'd be something I'd get back into. Ha. I do enjoy watching the FlightTest YouTube channel though.

I've got a few Flite Test planes, still have one I haven't built yet. Very soon though. hehe  >:D

Nervous thumbs for sure. How did it feel? Any tweeking to be done or perfect flight.

Oh yeah, got to poke some fun with the pilot. Did you use 2mokaiman (Tim) as a model? HeHe

Great and Fun video to watch. There is an RC field in Parkton, Md. These guys are serious. Lot's of fighter jets. I had a plane when I was a teenager, RC's weren't around yet, it had the strings and all it did besides crash was to fly around in a circle.

LOL Pilot was already in there. Plane flew perfectly, only change will be a new tail wheel which was not up to the task.

That's cool, Larry. Didn't know you were into control line at one time. Never had one myself, but I'd seen a few growing up and made me dizzy watching. lol

Shug is trying to keep control line flying alive. He was once a Ringling Brothers clown along with doing how-to's for hammock backpackers. ( Youtuber/74k-Subs). Makes his own music for his videos too.

I couldn't imagine doing control line, watching it is even hard. LOL

I finally got a DJI Spark, gave in and went store bought "drone" for the better footage I can get with it and HD streaming video with telemetry etc... So after using it for long enough to have built some confidence in it's ability, I put it up and let it hang out while I flew my latest giant scale Extra. First attempt at this, and I had a different prop on the plane so it was faster than I was used to too.
