Defective Classic and ES-Kape Jet Pumps
« on: January 24, 2015, 12:41:53 AM »
Wanted to share this with everyone since it's something that I've run into in the past with these pumps, porosity in the casting that compromises the integrity of the housing. This was from an ES-Kape, initial tear down showed full of water, after rebuilding and going for a test run I noticed oil was in the bottom of the housing.  >:(

A large crater was in the middle of the housing that connected to more areas in the rear bearing bore area that allowed water to be pumped into the housing, only to leak out later. Drove myself crazy trying to figure out why this pump was leaking and finally concluded it had to be a hole. Sure enough.......  So, after thoroughly flushing with brake clean and heating to out gas the pores, I packed it full of JB Marine on the outside and Loctite 480 allowed to soak into the pores on the inside. After a 24 hour cure everything was reassembled and stayed dry as a bone.

One more pump made Painless.  \./8

Another ES-Kape pump came in with a hole in the housing from porosity in the casting, one of the cone screw holes was barely intact from craters inside. Only 3 hours of use and full of water. For some reason the front seal was halfway out like somebody didn't press it in all the way, top half wasn't even touching the collar. Mokai might want to start paying more attention to who is assembling their pumps there at the factory.

Another ES-Kape pump came in for my upgrade. Impeller was fairly stiff to spin by hand, almost impossible to do with fingers by the splined end, due to the excessive press fit the axle had on the bearings. The front seal was not fully installed either, only halfway in. This pump had not seen water yet so this was 100% an assembly error. 2nd time I've seen this now.  :-O

Tom,  This pump bearing issue, would the inability to turn the impeller easily contribute to also not being able to reach the target of 4200 rpm's? ???

My impeller turns freely but firmly.  Would a video showing the rotation of the impeller give you a better idea.   Is there a spec on the amount of maximum force required to turn the impeller?

If you sit the pump on a bench, you should be able to turn the shaft with your fingers without the pump housing moving. If there is enough preload on the bearings, it could restrict max rpm from being achieved. Not sure if 200 rpm could be gained, but there will probably be some improvement. Hard to say for sure without the pump in hand.

Forgot to mention that I have not seen a stock motor run past 4000 rpm with the governor in use, one reason all of us with the old model would bypass it. Even still, the most I've seen any of my stock EX21's get was 4140 rpm without the governor. Who told you 4200 rpm?

Tom,  Here is a little video of my pump rotation as well as some marks, I believe where the bearings and seals make contact with the shaft.
We know Mokai will be seeing these video's and I wonder if they have some method of measuring the pump rotation ( if they care ) and how much force is required to turn!
Tell me what you think and do you have a video showing you rotating the impeller after you rebuilt the assembly.

Having trouble with YouTube, will put video on later. >:(

Video uploading of the rebuild pump. Will post in a bit. Marks are from the hull bearing where the shaft rides in it, no problem as long as you keep the bearing greased often. Every couple trips would be good, 5 hours of use on the meter at most.

Hey Tom,  Thanks for downloading my video.  I must have done something wrong on the input.  I did the https: thing as indicated,  did you put the long number in as well?

Anyway, I tried to rotate the pump shaft like you did in your video, my pump housing wanted to turn also with the shaft.  Who would have known! :-[   I would contact Mokai about this, but you know as well as I know they won't do anything about it!   This is becoming an endless project! >:(  Whats your turn around time?

Just about this time, I should have bought a bass boat with my son. \./8
By the way, did you get my other order?

John

When you deleted the "s" from https: you inadvertently deleted the : so it was http//www...... it should have been http://www..... ;)

Turnaround for pump rebuild is same day or next depending on when I get it.

I will be shipping your other order tomorrow afternoon, have a dentist appt. in the morning.  :-X

Another ES-Kape pump full of water. Porosity around one of the rear cone screw holes, enough threads to hold with longer screws, this porosity thing seems to be more of an issue than I thought. Seeing it more and more. So far it's been an easy fix.

Shows completed rebuild and how easy it spins now.
