Oh and I got the complete EX17 head from eBay, not Tom. They have one more if anyone is interested. $119 with priority shipping. Is a complete new takeoff with valve train, gaskets, and chain. So just bolt it on. Not sure if that's a good price or not, but seemed to be, and was about the only one I could find anyways. Haha.

I got a big piece of it at least! Haha! Also got a little PC heat exchanger (not pictured) to make an intercooler out of.
Also have an electric start EX21 with the 200 watt charging system on the way too. Didn't think I'd care about electric start, but after going out in it a few times, I've decided I'd like to have it. Guess I'm not as young as I thought I was.... Haha!

Glad everything arrived ok!

You're going to want an 87.5 main jet to go with that head. https://www.jetsrus.com/a_jets_by_carburetor_type/jets_mikuni_N100-606_pilot.htm

This video will walk you through the swap. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRrHbo8ZN5o

I could have made an intercooler for you too, didn't know you were interested so let me know if you decided to go that route. Can also make up the wiring harness w/ battery and all connectors for the new engine. Plug and play is always easier.  \./8

Yes sir it did.

I actually already have an 87.5 in hand!

I've got some ideas on how I'm going to do the intercooler and wiring for the new engine.

I appreciate all your help so far. Can't wait to get it all on!

Colter84 and Tom,
I bought the other EX17 head and installed.
Seems to be running OK, I get backfire when I shut it down.
I went 1 1/2 turns out on the idle screw, maybe just need to fine tune that ?
Any suggestions?  ???
Thanks, muddy

Idle screw? Do you mean idle mixture screw? 1 and a half turns out for the idle mixture is right, but that's just idle mixture. What main jet is in there? And is the governor being used? Need some more details.

I'm using the 87.5 jet you recommended.
I have disabled the governor by relocating the arm to hold it out of the way.
The screw I have adjusted is (I believe) the idle screw.
The brass screw on the plastic that has the spring and throttle rod attached to it.
Not sure where the idle mixture screw is.
Thanks, jeff

Ok, you are adjusting the idle speed screw. The idle mixture is right below where the linkage rod hooks to the carb lever, will either be a plastic knob to turn or a brass plug which would need to be removed to access the mixture screw.

Backfire can also be caused by an exhaust leak at the header.

Thanks for clarifying Tom,
I have your water cooled exhaust on a new install, so I don't think I have an exhaust.  ;)

Didn't mean the muffler was leaking, was referring to the header flange where it bolts to the head. If you didn't use the metal gasket and/or didn't tighten the nuts enough it would result in a leak that could cause backfire on shutdown. With the governor out of the picture there should be no backfire at all.

No Problem, I have the metal gasket and also use a little RED RTV, don't think I have any leaks.

Perfect, I'll have to agree with you then. lol   \./8

So how did you bypass the governor? Did you follow my video on adjusting the arm, then make a new linkage rod so it's direct?
