Subaru EX21.
« on: April 25, 2019, 07:46:16 PM »
Can someone help me out. I went online to price the engine. I am seeing huge differences in price. Upper three hundred to almost 600. I understand electric start adds about 100. Are there different versions of this engine?

There is the EX21 and the SP210, the price between those will vary. The Premium spec EX21 engines will be even higher, they are much nicer quality and have better timing chains. Charging systems vary too. 15w, 40w, and 200w, version were available. A Premium spec engine with electric start and 200w charging system retailed for $700+. SP170 electric start sold for around $400 I think. Subaru got out of the industry, so these motors aren't being made anymore. You can still find them but it's getting harder. Parts will be available for many years, plenty of that stuff floating around.

This is interesting news to me. I'd never heard of a Premium engine. So which version of the engine did Mokai supply with my 2017 Es-Kape? If one were ever to buy a new engine, would there be a performance difference in the Premium engine, or perhaps longevity?

Thanks Tom!

Mokai used the EX21 engines from Japan, but they weren't the Premium spec series. Those had yellow zink coated bolts and the carburetor fuel shutoffs were a slightly different design. No performance difference, I'm sure longevity would have been improved. The SP210 engines are fine too though, haven't seen any problems with those and I've used dozens of them. Any variation of this motor is good and will last just fine if maintained. Shame Subaru got out, they had a good thing going with these engines.

There is a nice electric start EX21 on eBay now for $349, I think with free shipping.  Hard to beat
