Pump clogging easily
« on: January 25, 2019, 04:52:35 PM »
I just went on the river, and little tiny leaves, I mean tiny, kept clogging the pump!
I had to get out of the boat four times, in very cold water.
I know it happens, but this is nuts.
I noticed little pieces on the pump fins, that should have just gone through, but didn't.

HELP!!!

Search the forum for "Stomp Grate".  I do not have one, but with Tom's clutch, and paying attention to leaves in the water, I'll drop to idle and drift over the bad areas without the pump moving water. That technique helps a lot.

My grate won't help with that situation at all. It would let more leaves pass through, and the pump has to be removed to clear it regardless. Clutch is the best tool to help if you are encountering sections you can see that are thick with leaves etc.. Go to idle and try to coast through, or paddle.

I guess I'm just surprised. The river is flooded, so there was stuff everywhere, but nothing I could really see. I steered clear of what I saw, but apparently that wasn't good enough.

One thing I learned from Tom's videos, the rocking of the boat really helped a lot!

I do have the clutch, but the water was moving pretty fast.

I broke the windshield getting into the boat the last time. The mud " sucked " my foot, and I lost my balance and fell onto  it, then the very cold water. My waders kept my dry.

Ahh, yeah. Flood levels always make it interesting. I've found that stopping, rocking the boat, steer full left or right and a full throttle blast on and off, alternating left and right, will usually dislodge most things enough to get back at normal speed. It takes practice to figure out a routine that provides results. Something you'll have to get used to. As long as I don't have to paddle, it usually doesn't bother me. Paddling is no fun in these. lol

How bad is the windshield? Must have been pretty cold for that to break. Glad you got through that ordeal without getting wet, that would have sucked!

I'll post a pic soon. I will still use it, as I would have been soaked from the spray today. Strong winds today.
It broke on the left side. Yes, it was cold, about 31 degrees.

I greased the clutch today. So easy with Tom's system. Marine grade .
Also got some anti corrosion spray, and did three layers.

I'm headed to the Delaware River Sunday, and will do my first oil change after that.
I bought 10w-30 full synthetic per Tom's email.

I'll post some pics of the damaged windshield tomorrow.

I hope you meant the hull bearing, and not the clutch. lol  :-O

Read this before changing your oil, level is important on these and the dip stick is not to be followed. http://www.improvingyourmokai.com/index.php/topic,1997.0.html

Yes, the hull bearing.........I'm still learning.
It's a heat wave today, in the high 40's, so I'm hitting the river. It's near the Betsy Ross Bridge, in Philadelphia.

Cool, I was hoping that's what you meant.  :D

It was almost 50 today, not quite. Got some flying in but I need a few more degrees and lots of sun before hitting the river. haha Hope you have fun. Be safe out there.  \./8

It was a learning process today. Didn't even think about the wind blowing today......until I got to the ramp. Very choppy water!  I wanted to see how the boat would do, and it performed very well.
Talk about spray!!! If I didn't have the windshield on, I would have swamped the boat, even with the bilge.

Now I see why people that go in bays & open water make spray skirts.

The water will be frozen soon, so I'm getting out while I can.
Here's some pic's, including the broken windshield:

Quite a break there! That wasn't one of my windshields though, wrong mounting hardware and no base trim. Having one is a must in conditions like that though!! Enjoy the time you have left before the freeze, glad that doesn't happen down here. lol
