New EX21 on ebay
« on: July 18, 2018, 01:22:10 PM »
I found this on ebay and wondered what kinds of modifications would be needed to fit my 2007 model. New here so may be a post already and just haven't found it yet.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Subaru-Robin-EX21-211cc-7HP-OHC-Horizontal-Shaft-Electric-Start-Engine-/283030761595

Seems like a very reasonable price for ES.

Thanks for any direction.

Tom is the man for this. He'll give you a list of parts needed from your Honda send them down to him and he'll have you up and running. Just drop the motor in and your'e ready to go.

Looks like there is a 2:1 gear box on that engine or it could be a 6:1 reduction.  You don't want it because it will not spin the pump fast fast enough.  They cannot be converted because the inside guts are metric.

Im also watching ebay for a good deal. I thought of getting manual start to not spend a lot on conversion but realized later that i will only do it once so why not have the electric so i have the option in future to go fancy in starting the engine...basically buy the electric start ready engine but continue to use pull start. So please share the link if any good deal out there...

Tom, Could you please share the work involve in the Subaru conversion if i decide to do it myself.
Heres my thoughts

1 replace linkage using Tom's linkage kit
2 buy Toms muffler
3 orient the pull starting chord to the right. Is this easy?
4 build my own hood or just buy toms engine hood
5 transfer the engine feet and air intake from honda to subaru

what else?

You'd be lucky to find any ES Ex21 engines out there anymore, all of my sources have dried up and what's left is pretty much what you guys are seeing. The one with gear box would only be good for the ES parts since Jim noted it wasn't easily converted back; I'm guessing the crank is a different dimension on those.  :(

I don't walk people through conversions, or make a kit to do them. Either I do it all, or you can look at pictures from my posts and try to copy what you see, but you'd be on your own with it. I would make a muffler though, I couldn't do anything with the hood unless I was doing the conversion.

About $1200 not counting shipping. I do have an engine I could put your name on if you decide.

No problem, first come first serve though and I only have two unspoken for. Next engine model is yet to be determined, could be nicer, could be less. ;)

It wouldn't be any faster than your Honda, and the muffler I would have to make for it would only fit the EX17. In the end you would have a better running boat that was quieter and have electric start / charging system, but you would probably go slower than your Honda. Upgrading to EX21 later would be possible, but would require a lot more work.  But if you can find a EX21 Electric start engine for a better price than mine, by all means feel free to have it shipped to me and I'd be glad to use it for your conversion.

So any EX21 will work. i dont have to even check other information like shaft size.
