Repower???
« on: April 11, 2018, 10:08:37 PM »
So I just picked up a 2006 Mokai over the weekend and would like to repower for peace of mind. I've seen that the EX21 with EX17 head seems to be quite the popular swap. What are some opinions on just an EX17 swap? Reason why I ask is a local pawn shop has a BNIB EX17 for $200. I figure just about anything will be better than a 12 year old 5hp honda. I imagine I'll probably do a 21 with that 17 head this winter. My rationalization for just throwing in the 17 as is is that seems to be the quickest and most reliable way to get on the water this season. Plus the ole pocket book is a little sore from picking the Mokai up. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I remember reading Timís post that may be of interest. If not, Iím sure others will chime in.

You will want to use the EX21 and add the 17 head later. The 17 has a shorter stroke with the same bore as the 21, so if you plan to use my muffler it will only fit the 21. 17 head upgrade is worth it if done right. If you're looking for a DIY project, there is plenty of info here to steer you in the right direction. If you want a plug and play situation with no guesswork, I have new electric start 21's and 17 heads and can set you up with one that you pretty much add oil and go.  \./8

Tom I wouldn't mind discussing my plug n play options. I am very much a do it yourselfer (been building cars, trucks, boats for 12 years and fabricate for a living) but I've learned reinventing the wheel sometimes isn't the best option. Especially since I'm going to have my hands full with hull repairs. Maybe we can work out a whole package as I will also be needing a clutch and muffler at the least. Just let me know.

Tom,
Does the 2006 model usually get cracks? Thought it was more with the Mokai Classic.

No, only the 2008-2012 models had issues with cracking around the pump, completely different design on those. Cracks in earlier models are from extreme wear or abuse and haven't shown to be in any particular area.
