Another electric starter problem....
« on: November 03, 2016, 05:28:38 PM »
I know this is going to be a difficult problem to diagnose, but here goes. One of my Subaru motors has suddenly stopped making any effort whatsoever to even crank or click when I turn the key. It worked fine one day but not the next. I hooked up the battery and ignition key box to another motor and it worked fine. So I know it's not either of those.

I have cleaned and tightened all of the wires and connectors. I checked the solenoid with a volt meter and it's getting power to it, but none coming out toward the starter even when I turn the key. I KNOW ALMOST NOTHING MORE ABOUT THIS KIND OF STUFF (sorry) and don't even know if that's normal.

Could the solenoid be bad, and if so or not, can it be tested? Any other ideas?

There are three terminals on the solenoid, two have nuts and one has a spayed connector. With the battery hooked up, use a screwdriver to jump the spayed connector to the terminal directly below it (that is 12v + to the battery). The starter should engage. If nothing happens, jump the two terminals, with nuts, together and see if the starter engages. If nothing happens when you do any of those procedures, the starter will need to be rebuilt or replaced.

Thanks for the reply. I jumped it from the splayed terminal to the nut and it engaged. Any thoughts from here?
(I'm making a run through Georgia next week on a metal detecting trip. I could toss it in the back of the truck)  ;)

Could be a bad connector in the harness, feel free to drop by on your way through. I would be glad to give it a once over and get it tuned up for you.  \./8

I'm getting ready to hit the road today. I'll pitch it in the truck and if I get that far west (in 3 to 9 days), I'll let you know and if you have a few free minutes, I'll stop by. If not, I'll get back on the harness after I get back. Thanks so much for your help.

So close, but so far away! Maybe next time, indeed. Feel free to holler with any questions until then, I'm always available.  ;)
