Subaru electric starter probelm
« on: October 30, 2016, 06:45:27 PM »
Hey guys... can anyone direct me to a thread or other information about how to test and repair the electric starter. I think the little gear on the starter is supposed to push forward as it turns and then engage the larger gear on the motor, but it's not doing that on mine now. I did have this problem last spring and managed to get it working again, but I can't for the life of me remember how.  It spins when I turn the key on, but it doesn't engage. Thanks in advance if there is any info out there.

If you take off the flywheel cover, you will see the gear you mentioned. Spraying some penetrating oil behind it on it's shaft would be the best way to get it freed up again.

I've tried that, but can't seem to get it to come out. I'll keep at it. Thanks.

Jeesh...  just tipped up the motor, filled the starter with WD-40, cranked a few times and it works! Took all of about 30 seconds. Thanks again....

I recently had the same problem. Followed the directions above. Hooked up the battery and it worked. Put the motor back in and the starter wont engage again. >:(

If you jump to two big leads and the starter works, but jumping the solenoid big lead to the blade connector just above it and nothing happens, then your solenoid is the problem. What have you done so far?
