Where to buy replacement grate?
« on: August 29, 2016, 08:30:29 PM »
Can anyone tell me where I can buy a replacement grate? I looked on the Mokai site and can't find any parts.

You could call mokai and see it they still have some of the old ones left, if not then let me know and I can make one for you out of stainless rod.

Thanks for getting back to me so quick. I'll do that and if I can't get this one fixed or get a new one, I'll definitely take you up on making one. I'll let you know how it goes.

Hello guys
Tom is testing a new grate for the escape right now. He is giving me a few ideas on the grates for the escape right now as it will be out of stainless steel. He will have the new design by wed of this coming week. after that i will work on the older mokai design. as i need one for my older mokai also. we all need a good grate. All grates are lasered and look professional.

Tom will add his comments to assure you guys your getting something good.

I'm looking forward to trying the next one. I really liked the last one you sent, it was longer than stock so more inlet area without really changing the slot size. Being stainless it is stronger too, very much like how it's worked out so far. Totally the way the factory should have made them in the first place. I'll post some pics once I get the next one in.  \./8

The one I got from him was for the ES-kape, haven't heard anything about the older models yet. I can still make you one if needed, wouldn't be a pretty as his laser cut parts, but it would be three times a strong. $75 is what I could do one for.

Hey Tom... 2 questions

1. The grate that you make, can you make it longer than the stock one so that it has more surface area for water intake? It seems like that might make a difference if it doesn't compromise the structural integrity.

2. With your bilge pump system... I want to get that set-up but am hoping I can drill my own housing to reduce shipping costs. Is that a difficult or especially tricky thing to do?

Thanks

I have a jig set up to make the grate, making it larger would be easier said than done. I haven't had any issues with any of mine, they flow more water than the stock grate as they are. Price would be $75

You have a charging system on your engines, so you could install electric bilge pumps much easier. The Pump bilge system is not easy to drill the port for, and I've had several people have to send their pump to me anyhow to fix what they couldn't do. I'd rather install it myself now than have to deal with the aftermath of a DIY job gone wrong. But again, with a battery on board you would be better off going electric. They would pump much faster too, the pump bilge would only handle 1 gallon per minute at full throttle.

Tom,   Is the discussion on grates related to increased water flow, which in turn will increase speed ???   Of course this will open the pump to larger debri as well >:( , but in my case where I travel open lakes with minimal debri won't be big issue.

Have you been effected by all the fires in your state, hopefully not.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving,  John

Hey John, A grate that has more open area will flow more water and has the potential for a little more speed. It's not a big difference, and there are trade offs on what can pass through with it, but this thread was mostly aimed at a replacement grate for the older model.

Another member here, Roadrunner68, has made some stainless grates for the ES-kape that are longer and have more open area. I have one of his prototypes that you are welcome to have for the cost of shipping.

Just so others can understand what I am talking about. This in the grate I need to replace. I am seeing the  unused surface area up in front of it (in the slot). I'm not talking about making the bar spacings wider, just longer. I'd think it might be something people would buy just for the potential performance enhancements. Heck, I'd buy it just to have a few more minutes of run time before it gets clogged with leaves this time of year.  :'(

Mine is longer than that, it uses the available area much better than that stubby version. The picture shows pretty much what you would be getting, minus the hinge.

I do have one stomp grate kit that could be ready to ship next week, when I get back from my Thanksgiving vacation. It's $325 + shipping.

Wow, Aquachigger.  That's the smallest grate I have seen.  The small size and the bolts in it are really slowing you down.  Tom's stainless grate will be a big plus for you.  Please keep the video's coming.  Seeing the Mokai used in such an interesting hobby is a treat.
