The engine is borderline overheating, and when you shut it down it continues to get hotter for a few minutes since there is no airflow. This causes the fuel in the carburetor to percolate up the main well, flooding the motor. Increasing the size of the  hood opening where the air plenum goes to the flywheel will allow more airflow, increasing exit area in the hood will allow more air to exit. Even still there could be some hot start issues, but not as bad as before. My exhaust system with fiberglass muffler cover helps immensely.

Personally, I have not seen hot-no-start problem yet, but I always (so far) run engine at low throttle or even idle for 3 minutes or longer before turning it off. In line with Tom's explanation, that should help some even without any modifications.

I make them as part of my exhaust system.
